A process whereby parties with a stake in a specific offense resolve collectively how to deal with the aftermath of the offense and its implications for the future of both parties involved. Objectives of restorative justice are to attend to victims' needs, reintegrate offenders into the community, enable offenders to assume responsibility for their action, recreate a working community that supports victims and offender rehabilitation and avoid escalation of legal justice and the associated costs and delays.
The needs of victims for information, validation, vindication, restitution, testimony, safety and support are the starting points for justice and healing.
The primary victims are those most directly affected by the offense but others, such as family members of victims and offenders, witnesses and members of the affected community, are also victims.
Since the primary obligation is to the victims, a restorative mediation process empowers victims to effectively participate in defining obligations
Offenders are provided opportunities and encouragement to understand the harm they have caused to victims and the community and develop plans for taking appropriate responsibility

Restorative justice is the process of addressing harm after conflict, shoplifting and employee theft, are forms of conflicts. Conflicts can be as small as shoplifting or employee theft or as big as hurting someone physically, emotionally or financially.
